Master of Arts in Education
RESOLUTION 3908 July 18 2006

The M.A. in Education is offered as a traditional academic program that aspires to assess the teaching practice through reflections on new cultural configurations carried out by people involved in the educational process. This program unite teachers and researchers who are experts in the area of contemporary education, and local, national and international teachers from renowned universities. In this way, the M.A. in Education promote and reinforce the conceptual development of teaching and learning from an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective.

Medellin University provides an M.A. in which the individual and principles of education rise above common forms and instruments, and internalize concepts from other areas such as anthropology, microsociology and practical philosophy derived from ontological and historical hermeneutics, with the purpose of contributing in an integral manner to the analysis of the triad education, cultural transformation and individual transformation. In other words, the focus is on certain contemporary premises that direct the study of practical implications and different ways of organizing educational processes.


  • To conceive educational problems in view of contemporary cultural theories.
  • To investigate with the aim of generating new knowledge based on an anthropological conception of the individual.
  • To suggest from the critical analysis of culture new ways of covering different teaching processes.
  • To recognize problems in sociocultural environments in order to formulate educational proposals in agreement with contemporary tendencies.
  • To define alternative ways of educational intervention corresponding to contemporary communicative models.

DIRECTED TO: Professionals from all kinds of disciplines interested in deepening their knowledge and practical skills in formal and non-formal educational processes.

GRADUATE PROFILE: A student who graduate from the M.A. in Education at Medellin University has the following characteristics:

He or she is able to recognize teachers, students and other types of educational agents as legitimate interlocutors and to maintain an open and permanent attitude of constructing knowledge about educational processes.

He or she is able to integrate interdisciplinary teams in order to administer and reflect on knowledge concerning research and educational consultancy.

  • He or she is able to intervene in educational processes by making use of a profound comprehension of the individual and all kinds of problems in an educational context.
  • He or she is able to put into practice and disseminate teaching models in which different contextual conditions are recognized and later on implement these models.

WORK AREA: Teaching, research and administration of educational processes.

EDUCATION PLAN: The education plan consists of 48 academic credits, divided into four semesters, and of three UOCs: Education in Context (Central and Optional), Investigative and Interdisciplinary Education and Heuristic and Instrumental Education.
