Corporate social responsibility is made up of three items, and they are an institution's Human rights, environmental respect and economic results. Furthermore, one of the main organizational objectives related to the aforesaid triad is that it can be long-term sustainable.

In 1963, McGuire proposed that social responsibility supposes that institutions are those which not only have legal and economic obligations, but also certain responsibilities with and towards society to go beyond just mere obligations. On theother hand in 1979, A. Carroll conceived the concept of social responsibility in an organization as the action that embraces economic legal ethical and discretional expectations society has regarding organizations at a given moment.

At our University, we share both postures and we are committed by them, for an Institution must act responsibly in accordance with pre-defined social policies and goals, and for us, our Charter of Incorporation and our Institutional Education project must make them explicit.

In this regard, Social Balance is a tool that enables quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility in a determined period of time, and within the framework of social assets and liabilities in internal and external settings. likewise, it allows us to conceive a diagnose of the social climate, as well as, to provide information, plan a social policy and reach agreements with interest groups with which the organization interacts.

This important process of Social Balance is to gather and systematize information corresponding to the Institution's social dimensions objectively discovering an indicator relation, and a realistic rigorous enumeration of the actions carried out in the social sphere.

Thus, Universidad de Medellin turned in to the social and academic community, the first Social Balance exercise corresponding to 2005, in accordance with its Charter of Incorporation and its Institutional Education Project (EPI); and above all, the university is conscientious of the commitment it has with its audiences including its administrative personnel, professors, students, alumni, retirees, suppliers, neighboring communities, society in general and the Government of Colombia.
